Desert Bighorn Sheep: The Canyon Climbers
Zion’s most iconic animal inhabitants are the desert bighorn sheep — and they’ll stop you in your tracks. These agile creatures cling to sheer cliff faces with ease, their specialized hooves gripping sandstone like velcro. Spot them most often near the Canyon Overlook Trail or from the shuttle road early in the morning.
California Condor: A Conservation Success Story
With a wingspan up to 9.5 feet, the California condor is North America’s largest flying bird — and Zion is one of the best places on Earth to see one. Once nearly extinct, condors have made a remarkable comeback thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. Keep your eyes on the thermals above the canyon rim.
Mule Deer: The Canyon Floor Locals
Mule deer are a common and beloved sight along the canyon floor, especially at dawn and dusk. Don’t be surprised to find them grazing just off the shuttle road or along the Emerald Pools trail. They’re remarkably unbothered by people — though park rules require you to keep your distance. Admire from afar and let them be wild.
