So you’ve finally decided to make the drive to Zion National Park. Good call. But before you lace up those hiking boots, here are five things every first-timer needs to know before hitting the canyon.
1. Ditch the auto — Ride the Shuttle
Private vehicles are not allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive during peak season. The free park shuttle is your best friend. Arrive early (before 8 AM) to snag a spot without the chaos, or stay right on Zion Park Blvd to walk to the shuttle stop.
2. Book The Narrows Permits Early
The Narrows — Zion’s iconic slot canyon hike through the Virgin River — fills up fast. Permits for top-down entries are lottery-based and go quickly. Bottom-up hikes don’t require a permit, but go early to beat the crowds.
3. Layers Are Your Best Friend
Southern Utah weather is famously unpredictable. Mornings in the canyon can be chilly even in summer, while afternoons bake in the sun. Pack a light jacket and moisture-wicking layers no matter what month you visit.
4. Drink Way More Water Than You Think
Altitude, dry air, and desert heat are a sneaky combo. Most visitors underestimate how much they’ll need. A good rule of thumb: one liter per hour of hiking. There’s no shame in a snack break in the shade.
5. Springdale Is Part of the Adventure
The town of Springdale sits right at Zion’s south entrance along Zion Park Blvd — and it’s worth exploring. Great food, local gear shops, and some of the best views of the red cliffs you’ll find anywhere. Don’t just rush into the park; soak up the gateway town too.
